A major fire tore through an oil processing unit at Russia's Syzran refinery after Samara region authorities declared a drone attack, with images showing heavy smoke and open flames at the site.
About 40 minutes after a 04:00 drone-threat alert, officials activated the Kovyor air-safety plan, temporarily shutting regional airspace as Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev later said two people were killed and several injured.
Rosaviatsiya also temporarily closed airports in Saratov, Nizhny Novgorod, Penza, Makhachkala and Kaluga, indicating wider disruption beyond Samara Oblast.
The Syzran plant has been hit multiple times before, most recently in April, and processes 7 million to 8.9 million tonnes of oil a year while helping supply the Russian armed forces.
