Two people died near Lodi, California, after authorities said truck driver Manvir Singh skidded off a road around 12:20 p.m., hit a guardrail and triggered a four-vehicle crash before fleeing on foot.
San Joaquin County deputies arrested Singh, and DHS said he now faces vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run resulting in death or injury, and resisting or obstructing a police officer.
DHS said Singh entered the U.S. illegally through Arizona in 2023 and was later released; ICE has asked California authorities to hold him for transfer into federal custody.
Federal officials cast the case as part of a broader pattern, saying Singh is the fourth immigrant truck driver with that surname accused in a fatal crash since last year.
The arrest is likely to intensify pressure for Dalilah’s Law, a proposed federal measure that would bar states from issuing commercial driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants.
