Suffolk County police charged Deyonna Subert, 41, with second-degree criminal mischief after a Sacred Heart of Jesus statue at St. Mary’s Church in East Islip was found decapitated.
Police said the damage occurred around 11:15 p.m. on May 15, and Hate Crimes Unit detectives arrested Subert in Bay Shore at 6:39 a.m. Wednesday.
Churchgoers discovered the missing head Sunday morning as families arrived for First Communion services; Pastor Anthony Iaconis later found it in nearby bushes.
Subert was held overnight and was due in Central Islip court on Thursday, while the parish said donations had already begun and the statue could be repaired within days.
How will the system balance justice for the desecrated statue with compassionate care for the mentally ill suspect?
Is this statue's destruction an isolated tragedy or a symptom of a deeper cultural conflict over sacred symbols?
What evidence proved the church vandalism was a mental health crisis and not a targeted anti-religious hate crime?
