Miles Teller said a 2015 Esquire profile he called "so mishandled" led him to avoid editorial profiles for about a decade, arguing the piece distorted what happened in the interview.
The 39-year-old told IndieWire he stopped doing off-camera profiles because writers can misquote, reorder comments or describe events inaccurately, calling the experience a violation.
Teller said the article nearly derailed his career narrative, though he argued directors, actors and crews know his real work ethic because "you can’t hide who you are" on set.
The backlash has not fully faded: social media reactions to his explanation were split between users who said misquotes can damage reputations and others who said his image problem goes beyond one profile.
The dispute dates to Esquire's 2015 portrayal of Teller as "kind of a d---," a label he publicly rejected at the time as "very misrepresenting."
