Gerardo Mendoza-Acoltzi was indicted by a federal grand jury after prosecutors said he tried to burn an ICE facility in Surprise, Arizona, during a Feb. 21 attack and was arrested on May 7.
Court papers say surveillance video showed him unloading a propane tank near the entrance before 1 a.m., smashing a lobby window with it and using a connected torch to ignite window shades inside.
Prosecutors also allege he vandalized the site and arranged rocks outside to spell an anti-ICE message; the charges are malicious damage to federal property and willful depredation of U.S. property.
Attempted arson of federal property can bring up to 20 years in prison, and the case lands amid broader warnings about threats to immigration enforcement sites, including a recent attempted arson at a DHS office in Meridian, Idaho.
