Jo Diop, 19, and Kush Burman, 20, said the Race Across the World finale is a "high stress, very tense" finish to the 12,000km trek to northern Mongolia.
Mongolia's terrain drives that tension, they said, with few roads and maps offering little help on the last leg of the BBC competition for a £20,000 prize.
Kush also reflected on the public response to his emotional episode in Kazakhstan, where memories of his stepfather's death left him in tears; he said messages from viewers with similar experiences had been "heart-warming."
The Liverpool friends said their bond helped them handle the race's toughest moments, and they would split the £20,000 equally if they win.
The finale airs on BBC One at 20:00 BST on 21 May, with the pair saying the show has already brought unexpected recognition, including their first autographs.
