A week after skiing down Lhotse, Polish ski mountaineer Bartek Ziemski descended from Everest’s 8,849-meter summit to base camp without supplemental oxygen or guide support.
Heavy Everest-season traffic and fixed ropes made the line more hazardous, yet the descent is likely the first fully self-supported ski run of the world’s highest mountain completed without oxygen.
Nine 8,000-meter peaks have now been skied by Ziemski without oxygen, including Broad Peak, Annapurna, Makalu, Lhotse and Everest; five remain, among them K2 and Nanga Parbat.
