CENTCOM said US forces boarded the Iranian-flagged M/T Celestial Sea in the Gulf of Oman, searched it and released it after ordering the crew to change course away from an Iranian port.
The interception was triggered by suspected violation of the US blockade on Iranian shipping, which Washington imposed after Iran largely shut the Strait of Hormuz to non-Iranian vessels.
It was at least the fifth vessel boarded since the blockade began, even as Trump said he had postponed a planned major strike for two to three days to give diplomacy more time.
Iran said it was examining a new US proposal delivered via Pakistan, while Trump said talks were in their "final stages" and crude prices fell about 6% on hopes of a deal.
