20-30 minutes of brisk walking daily can help young Indians control high blood pressure, cardiologist Dr. Sanjay Kumar Chugh said, as hypertension increasingly appears in younger adults.
Sedentary work, stress, unhealthy diets and obesity are driving the rise, he said, with regular walking improving circulation, strengthening the heart and reducing pressure on blood vessels over time.
Brisk walking — fast enough to raise breathing and heart rate without exhaustion — also helps manage weight and lower stress hormones, two major contributors to hypertension.
Uncontrolled hypertension can lead to heart attack, stroke, kidney disease and vision problems, making daily activity and other lifestyle changes critical.
Chugh said walking works best alongside lower salt intake, avoiding smoking and alcohol, eating more fruits and vegetables, sleeping well and consulting a doctor before intense exercise if heart disease is present.
