Steve Spurrier used his South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame induction speech Tuesday to needle Clemson coach Dabo Swinney, joking that the Tigers "didn't play very well" when Spurrier became the Gamecocks' winningest coach.
The 81-year-old capped the ribbing by marveling that South Carolina beat Clemson five years in a row from 2009 to 2013, a stretch that became a defining part of his tenure in Columbia.
Spurrier was inducted for a 10-season run in which he went 86-49, delivered three straight 11-win seasons and three consecutive AP top-10 finishes, and set the program record for coaching wins.
The remarks extended a high-profile week for Spurrier, who on Saturday walked singer Morgan Wallen out at Florida's Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, the venue he famously dubbed "The Swamp."
Where does Spurrier’s allegiance truly lie: with the Gators he led to a title or the Gamecocks he made into winners?
Is Spurrier's induction the capstone of an era or the start of a new golden age for all Gamecock sports?
