Nancy Mace Proposes Amendment Barring 19 Foreign-Born Lawmakers From Congress

Rep. Nancy Mace plans to introduce a constitutional amendment Wednesday requiring members of Congress, federal judges and Senate-confirmed appointees to be natural-born U.S. citizens.
Mace said the change is needed because some foreign-born officials have “divided loyalties,” singling out Rep. Ilhan Omar as Republicans intensify scrutiny of her citizenship history.
More than a dozen current lawmakers would be affected, including Republicans such as Sen. Bernie Moreno and Reps. Young Kim, Juan Ciscomani and Victoria Spartz, along with Democrats including Pramila Jayapal, Ted Lieu and Robert Garcia.
The proposal faces long odds: constitutional amendments need two-thirds approval in both chambers and ratification by three-fourths of states.
If adopted, the rule would extend the Constitution’s existing natural-born requirement for presidents and vice presidents across much of the federal government, potentially barring future cabinet officials such as naturalized citizens.
How might this proposal affect the rights and futures of all naturalized U.S. citizens?
