Ruth Dodsworth said Jonathan Wignall left her “absolutely penniless” and burdened with debts in her name, describing years of financial abuse after he took control of her salary and spending.
Dodsworth said she had no access to her own money, had to ask for exact cash even for lunch, and lost her bank card, while Wignall also monitored her phone use and turned up at work to check on her.
October 2019 marked the breaking point: her children warned her not to come home, police arrested Wignall the next day, and she spent 10 hours giving statements before learning his behavior met the definition of coercive control.
In April 2021, Wignall was jailed for 3 years after pleading guilty to coercive and controlling behavior and stalking, and a restraining order barred him from contacting her.
Dodsworth said rebuilding her life meant starting over with a ruined credit rating and no bank account, though she now speaks publicly to show victims they can recover.
