NordVPN won ZDNET’s travel VPN speed test after the outlet compared five services using median download speeds on servers in New York, London and Tokyo.
2,160 data points per VPN were gathered over a six-day cycle, with tests every 16 minutes on a Spectrum cable connection using each provider’s preferred protocol against an OpenVPN baseline.
NordVPN’s NordLynx protocol stood out most on long-distance connections, while Surfshark tied it for fastest download speed in one Tokyo result and led one closer-location test.
ExpressVPN posted some of the weakest preferred-protocol download speeds with Lightway-UDP, while IPVanish showed solid speeds across locations on WireGuard.
ZDNET said results can vary by protocol and internet connection, but framed the ranking as a travel-season guide for users weighing speed, security, streaming access and local VPN legality.
