EV Drivers Save $800-$1,200 in 10 U.S. States as Gas Tops $4.50 a Gallon

Climate Crisis 247 identified 10 states where EV drivers save just over $800 to more than $1,200 a year on fuel, with Washington, California and Oregon ranking highest.
AAA and U.S. Department of Energy data show why: national gas prices have climbed above $4.50 a gallon, up about 43% from a year earlier, pushing typical annual gasoline spending to roughly $2,000.
The analysis assumed 10,573 miles driven a year, a gas vehicle getting 24.4 mpg and an EV using 0.3 kilowatt-hours per mile, comparing state-level gasoline and charging prices as of Thursday.
Those operating-cost savings could help offset EV sticker shock, but only partly: Cox Automotive said the average new EV cost $55,211 in April, about $6,200 more than a new gas vehicle.
U.S. adoption still trails other markets—EVs and plug-in hybrids made up about 10% of new-car sales in 2025, versus more than 30% in the UK, over 50% in China and nearly 100% in Norway.

The 2026 Electric Vehicle Landscape: Cost Advantages, Policy Shifts, and Infrastructure Gaps
Overview
As of mid-2026, the economic appeal of electric vehicles (EVs) is stronger than ever, driven by the stability of electricity costs compared to the ongoing volatility of gasoline prices. Even when gas prices were low in early 2024, EVs were already a more economical choice, and this advantage has only increased. The unpredictable nature of gas prices has made consumers more interested in switching to EVs, as they seek predictable and lower fueling costs. This growing incentive, combined with the ability to better manage transportation expenses, continues to draw more drivers toward electric transportation.
