Wednesday’s Cook County hearing centers on Alphanso Talley, 27, who is charged with killing Officer John Bartholomew, 28, and gravely wounding another officer during an April 25 hospital escape attempt.
Prosecutors say Talley faked swallowing narcotics after his arrest in a Family Dollar armed robbery, got taken to Swedish Hospital, then pulled a gun from under a blanket, shot both officers and tried to flee.
Judge D’Anthony Thedford has already ordered Talley held without release, calling him a danger to anyone around him; the case includes murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, escape and weapons charges.
Talley’s record spans nearly 9 years and 7 prior convictions, including aggravated robbery with a firearm and battery on a peace officer; he was on electronic monitoring and had a March 11 warrant after monitor violations.
The killing has intensified Chicago criticism of Illinois’ no-cash-bail SAFE-T Act and electronic monitoring, with officials citing more than 170 CPD officers shot or shot at from 2021 to 2024.
