Vernon Jones and Tim Fleming moved into a June 16 runoff after no candidate won the 50% needed in Georgia’s Republican primary for secretary of state.
The contest drew five GOP candidates, including Gabriel Sterling, whose defense of Georgia’s 2020 election gave him statewide visibility, and unfolded under the long shadow of Trump’s stolen-election claims.
Jones, a former Democratic lawmaker turned Trump ally, campaigned as a sharp critic of Georgia’s election system, while Fleming, a former Georgia GOP chairman, pushed tighter election procedures.
The runoff winner will face the Democratic nominee in November for an office that controls voter registration, ballot administration and election certification in a closely watched battleground state.
The race carries added weight because current Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who resisted efforts to overturn Georgia’s 2020 results, is leaving the post to run for governor.
