  • ICE arrested Aman Kumar on May 13 after Fresno authorities had released him from custody despite a felony hit-and-run case tied to critical injuries to a 4-year-old boy.
  • Investigators said the child entered a roadway from a backyard, several cars stopped, and Kumar allegedly drove around them in a bike lane before striking the boy and fleeing.
  • DHS said Kumar, an Indian national who entered the U.S. illegally in 2023 and was later released, was taken into custody outside criminal court after the local release.
  • The department used the case to attack California's sanctuary policies, saying the state has declined to honor ICE detainers and has released 4,561 undocumented immigrants with criminal charges or convictions since Jan. 20.
  • DHS also pointed to ICE's February letter to California Attorney General Rob Bonta citing more than 33,000 undocumented immigrants in custody statewide and urging officials to honor detainers.
