New York City said Monday it will reassess press-credential standards after three credentialed Mangione supporters publicly celebrated the 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson and said they would spread their message at September jury selection.
City Hall said there has been no formal rule change, but revoking an issued pass is difficult because it requires a hearing before the city’s Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings.
The supporters, operating as “Mangionistas,” said they plan to set up tables outside court with jury-nullification material while insisting they would not approach selected jurors directly.
Mangione’s lawyers condemned the comments and said the activists do not speak for him, while the Manhattan district attorney declined comment.
A recent FOIA response showed 32 independent journalists received credentials for Mangione coverage; the dispute has sharpened scrutiny of a system moved from the NYPD to the mayor’s office in 2021.
