Hakeem Jeffries told a progressive conference Tuesday that Democrats must not only beat “MAGA extremists” electorally but also “break their spirit,” casting the fight as a choice between extremists breaking the country or Democrats breaking them.
The House minority leader tied the rhetoric to what he called extremism “being unleashed on the American people” and paired it with a confident prediction that Democrats will retake the House in November.
Republicans quickly seized on the remarks, with allies of Speaker Mike Johnson and RNC Chairman Joe Gruters saying Jeffries was talking about breaking the spirit of 77 million Trump voters and portraying the language as violent.
The flare-up adds to already tense partisan messaging ahead of the midterms, where Jeffries would be in line for the speaker’s gavel if Democrats win back the chamber.
