Custom prompts, full message drafting and screen-aware writing have surfaced in Gboard beta, pointing to a broader expansion of Google’s Gemini-powered Writing Tools.
The new controls would let users type their own rewrite instructions instead of picking presets, ask Gboard to generate fresh text, and use on-screen content or screenshots for better context.
Screenshot-based drafting would require gallery access, while another unreleased option appears designed to read conversations and refine replies from chat context.
Google’s internal guidance describes the model as an “expert writing coach” that could offer 3 tap-to-apply suggestions such as tone shifts, with processing likely staying on-device on supported phones.
The features were uncovered in an APK teardown ahead of I/O 2026 and were not fully functional, meaning they may change or never reach public release.
