Google detailed a broader Android Auto media-app overhaul at I/O 2026, centered on Car App Library v1.9.0-alpha01 and a beta program that gives developers earlier access to the new design system.
The update loosens previously standardized in-car layouts with expanded headers, spotlight sections, new progress bars, chip shortcuts, condensed items and an adaptive mini-player that lets users browse while managing playback.
Six apps are set to adopt the changes first: Spotify, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, Gaana, PocketFM and TuneIn; Google had already previewed custom interfaces from Spotify and YouTube last week.
The media redesign builds on Google's wider Android Auto push announced earlier, which also includes a full-screen interface refresh, widgets and support for video apps.
