Hayden Panettiere said she nearly died during the 2014 birth of daughter Kaya, recalling in an interview for her memoir that she was "knocking on death's doorstep" during a C-section.
Seven blood transfusions and an infection followed the delivery, but Panettiere said the ordeal cemented her willingness to sacrifice herself to protect her child.
That start to motherhood was later complicated by postpartum depression, which Panettiere said led her to relinquish custody in 2018 so 4-year-old Kaya could live in Europe with Wladimir Klitschko while she sought treatment.
Now 36, Panettiere said she is still processing the experience as her memoir This Is Me: A Reckoning arrives May 19, hoping her account helps others facing similar struggles.
