Google Brings Gemini to 300 Million TVs, Phasing Out Watch Next by 2027

Google said Google TV and Android TV now reach more than 300 million monthly active devices as it embeds Gemini more deeply into TV search and discovery.
Gemini is being upgraded from basic voice control to multimodal answers—combining visuals, video and text—to surface shows, workouts or documentaries from supported streaming services directly on screen.
Google is also steering developers toward pointer remotes and the Engage SDK, which add cursor-style navigation, hover support, smoother scrolling and tighter links to recommendation rows like Continue Watching.
That shift makes newer recommendation tools Google's long-term path: the older Watch Next system will lose support in the second half of 2027 as Google TV moves beyond a simple app launcher.
