Katy Tur came under fire after asking on MS NOW whether Mike Johnson was putting “God over the Declaration of Independence” by saying rights come from “our Creator and heavenly father.”
Mike Johnson replied that the Declaration’s second paragraph itself says people are “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights,” and Ted Cruz and other conservatives amplified that criticism on X.
The clip spread widely online as commentators including Marc Thiessen, Mitch Little and Kristan Hawkins accused Tur of historical ignorance and mocked the question.
McKay Coppins pushed back on-air, saying the idea of God-given rights is common in American political thought, though he and Tur argued Johnson’s remarks looked different in the context of a rally tied to Christian nationalism concerns.
Johnson had made the remarks at the weekend “Rededicate 250” event on the National Mall, a prayer gathering tied to the run-up to America’s 250th birthday.
