Chiba police arrested two Americans Monday after one allegedly jumped into Punch the monkey’s enclosure at Ichikawa City Zoo while the other filmed.
A man in a blue suit and yellow emoji head was seen carrying a stuffed toy into the enclosure, in an apparent stunt tied to a meme-coin promotion and online content.
Red Jahnai Daysun, 24, and Neal Jabahri Duan, 27, both denied the charges, police said.
Punch, a 9-month-old macaque, had gone viral after zoo staff gave him a stuffed orangutan because his mother abandoned him and he struggled to socialize with other monkeys.
