Google Brings SynthID Checks to Chrome as OpenAI Adds Watermarks to ChatGPT Images

Chrome and Google Search will start verifying whether images carry SynthID markers and C2PA credentials, giving users a single place to inspect suspicious media.
OpenAI is widening that pool of detectable content by embedding SynthID in images generated by ChatGPT, Codex and its API, alongside the C2PA metadata it already adds.
The expansion matters because Chrome and Search put provenance checks in front of far more users, while browser-level verification can bypass sites that fail to display AI labels.
C2PA still faces a major weakness: metadata is often stripped by social platforms, uploads or screenshots, while SynthID is pitched as harder to remove but covers fewer models.
Meta is also set to use C2PA on Instagram for some camera-captured images, a test of whether broader labeling can help users separate authentic photos from deepfakes.
