Trials of Time went live on May 20 as Civilization VII’s biggest post-launch update, giving existing owners the free Alexander the Great leader alongside sweeping gameplay changes.
The headline shift is Time Tested Civs, which removes the requirement to switch civilizations at era breaks and restores full-campaign play as a single civ after more than a year of feedback and playtesting.
Firaxis also added Syncretism and Affirmation systems, letting players borrow Apex Age units or infrastructure from other civilizations and further strengthen their own unique traits.
The patch overhauls victory conditions to judge dominance across the whole campaign, replaces Legacy Paths with six-attribute Triumphs, and adds a fractal continent map, commerce screen, Council of Advisors and balance updates.
The changes address criticism of Civilization VII’s launch design, where forced civilization changes across three ages had drawn negative player reaction.
