Midseason 2027 is the target for ABC’s straight-to-series Grey’s Anatomy spinoff, an untitled medical drama set at a rural West Texas medical center.
Shonda Rhimes and Grey’s showrunner Meg Marinis co-created and will executive produce the series, with Ellen Pompeo also attached as an executive producer.
The offshoot marks the franchise’s 4th series and its first not centered on the West Coast, a big city, or a current Grey’s regular spun into a lead role.
ABC is likely to pair the new show with Grey’s 23rd season on Thursdays, with both expected to have limited episode orders as the network expands its scripted slate again.
The pickup extends ABC’s strategy of turning its longest-running dramas into franchises, while Grey’s ended Season 22 with 5.99 million viewers in MP+7.
Will the 'Grey's Anatomy' Texas spinoff just dramatize a crisis, or could it actually help save rural healthcare?
