Craig Morton died May 9 at 83 from acute respiratory failure caused by severe sepsis stemming from a urinary tract infection, Marin County's Vital Statistics Office said.
His wife, Kym Galloway, told The Denver Post the former quarterback had been struggling with pain and back problems and said shortly before his death that he was tired.
Morton helped lead Denver to its first playoff appearance and Super Bowl XII in the 1977 season, when the Broncos went 12-2 and he won multiple league honors.
Across 207 NFL games with Dallas, New York and Denver, Morton threw for 27,908 yards and 183 touchdowns, including 11,895 passing yards in six seasons with the Broncos.
