Late-week acquisitions revived a sluggish Cannes Film Market, led by Netflix’s pickup of animated feature “In Waves” and Warner Bros. specialty label Clockworks entering exclusive talks for Park Chan-wook’s “The Brigands of Rattlecreek.”
Netflix took worldwide rights outside France for “In Waves,” a hand-drawn Critics’ Week title from Phuong Mai Nguyen adapted from AJ Dungo’s graphic novel, with Will Sharpe and Stephanie Hsu voicing the English-language version.
Clockworks’ move on Park’s revenge Western would be an early statement for the new Warner Bros. division; the package is set to star Matthew McConaughey, Austin Butler, Pedro Pascal and Tang Wei.
The late burst followed A24’s reported $17 million buy of “Club Kid” and Amazon’s pickup of most international rights to Mimi Cave’s cycling thriller “Pumping Black.”
The finish helped recast Cannes as a success, but only after an opening stretch so quiet that sellers spent much of the market waiting for buyers to engage.
