June 5 is the release date for Travis Knight’s live-action Masters of the Universe, which he says centers on Prince Adam’s transformation into He-Man rather than trying to cram in the full franchise.
Knight said the film’s key challenge was tone: keeping the property’s fun, campy and sometimes ridiculous spirit while treating Eternia, Castle Grayskull and the characters seriously enough to give the story emotional weight.
Nicholas Galitzine plays Adam in an origin story about a prince separated from his family who returns years later to save his home and reclaim his throne, with Knight framing Adam as empathy and He-Man as strength.
More than 40 years of mythology informed the film, but Knight said time limits forced cuts; he named Ram Man, Fisto and Mekaneck as characters who made it in, while Mer-Man appears only as a background nod.
