Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson said Monday that the Supreme Court’s quick-turn, often unexplained emergency orders are disrupting normal practice and making its decisions look political.
At the American Law Institute’s annual meeting in Washington, Jackson said public confidence is “the judiciary’s currency” and that the court must act in ways that shore up its neutrality and nonpartisan image.
Her remarks came as the justices face growing scrutiny over the court’s legitimacy and over their relationships with one another during a month of public appearances around the country.
Chief Justice John Roberts recently rejected the idea that justices are political actors, while Justice Clarence Thomas said the court is now “different,” underscoring signs of strain before major rulings due by late June or early July.
