Windows 11 devices with about 10MB or less free on the EFI System Partition can fail Microsoft’s May security update during reboot at roughly 35%-36%, then roll back with systems still missing dozens of patches.
Microsoft advised either changing a Windows registry setting to force the update or waiting for a future fix, but analysts warned the registry workaround should be backed up, piloted and rolled out slowly.
Gartner’s Eric Grenier recommended expanding the partition to 1.5GB, saying that would also support Windows Recovery Environment updates without materially affecting user storage.
Consultants said the late-stage failure can burn maintenance windows, trigger help-desk tickets and leave fleets exposed, turning a small partition issue into a broader patch-management and endpoint-hygiene problem.
This latest update flaw stems from old partition standards. Is Windows' legacy code making modern security impossible?
To stay secure, must Windows users now master risky partition management?
