India said it has kept buying Russian oil before, during and after U.S. sanctions waivers, signaling no policy change tied to Washington's stance.
Sujata Sharma, a joint secretary in the petroleum ministry, said the purchases are driven by commercial logic rather than waiver status.
Enough crude has already been tied up and there is no shortage of supply, Sharma said, arguing that waiver changes will not affect India's buying decisions.
The comments underscore New Delhi's position that energy sourcing remains a price-and-availability decision even as U.S. sanctions policy toward Russia shifts.
