Washington on May 18 designated 11 Cuban regime elites and three government organizations, saying they are tied to repression and Cuba’s security apparatus.
Executive Order 14404, signed May 1, gives the Trump administration broad authority to target those backing the regime, threatening U.S. national security or helping suppress Cubans.
The move builds on earlier Treasury actions against 11 officials, the Directorate of Intelligence and the Interior Ministry, including ministers, generals and intelligence leaders.
U.S. officials said more sanctions are expected in coming days and weeks as part of a wider campaign to cut off illicit assets, pressure Havana and promote human rights and democracy in Cuba.
