University of Louisville Launches $3.7 Million Zurada Supercomputer to Speed AI Research

$3.7 million bought the University of Louisville a new high-performance computing system that delivers more than 1.6 petaflops, expanding research capacity across materials science, medicine and AI.
Zurada’s 119 servers, 43 NVIDIA GPUs, 200-gigabit-per-second networking and 5 petabytes of storage let researchers run simulations, train models in parallel and automate sequences of computational experiments.
Badri Narayanan said the system could cut development timelines for next-generation iron-and-aluminum battery technologies to 3 to 4 years from 10 to 15 by speeding AI-guided testing.
The machine is also being used for personalized medicine, including eating-disorder treatment tools and chronic kidney disease research, extending its role beyond engineering into clinical AI applications.
