More than 194,000 audits and cross-checks are planned for 2026 as Greece's AADE rolls out an AI- and big-data system to build a digital profile for every taxpayer ID.
Data from bank deposits, POS and cash registers, VAT filings, real estate, short-term rentals, customs records, e-commerce and even social media will be matched in real time to flag undeclared income and suspicious discrepancies.
Ninety countries will automatically share information on Greek taxpayers' foreign bank accounts, investments and assets, while DEOS units are set to conduct at least 39,300 audits focused on VAT fraud, smuggling and hidden economic activity.
The plan also expands online POS monitoring, electronic invoicing, Digital Delivery Notes and the new MIDA property registry, alongside full activation of the PARE profiling system already being used to assess debtors' payment capacity.
AADE's 2026 operational plan targets €75.45 billion in total revenue, including €29.2 billion from VAT and an extra €1.5 billion from audits, cross-checks and electronic data analysis.

AI and Digital Transformation in Greek Tax Administration: Addressing €114.5 Billion in Tax Arrears
Overview
Greece faces a growing challenge with tax arrears, which puts significant fiscal pressure on the country and highlights the urgent need for reform. The Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) is responding by implementing robust strategies to improve revenue collection and taxpayer compliance. Historically, difficulties in identifying and managing tax debtors have led to a large buildup of overdue taxes. To address this, AADE is investing in advanced technological solutions, aiming to modernize tax administration, tackle long-standing structural issues, and secure essential public funds for Greece’s future.
