Kestrel Supercomputer Accelerates 500+ Energy Projects, Supporting 800+ Users in FY2025

NLR said Kestrel and related computing resources advanced more than 500 energy modeling and simulation projects in fiscal 2025, supporting 800-plus users and generating over 700 technical outputs, including 293 peer-reviewed papers.
FY2025 upgrades to two CPU racks, expanded GPU resources and added memory increased throughput for AI and machine-learning workloads, including large-model training, surrogate modeling and larger, higher-resolution simulations.
Those capabilities were applied to projects such as machine-learning searches for critical-mineral-free electrocatalysts, virtual bioreactor design testing and dsgrid power-demand modeling for high-resolution U.S. electricity planning.
The annual report underscores DOE-backed labs' growing use of high-performance computing, AI and hybrid cloud systems to speed applied energy research across materials science, manufacturing, fluid dynamics and integrated energy systems.
