Study Says 40-Year-Olds Can Gain Up to 11.7 Years by Switching Diets

A modeling study cited by aging experts found 40-year-olds who move from a typical Western diet to an “optimal” diet could add about 10 years of life for women and 11.7 years for men.
The biggest shifts were eating more legumes, nuts and whole grains while cutting red and processed meat, a pattern experts described as predominantly plant-based and minimally processed.
Doctors also highlighted enough protein—roughly 1.2 to 1.6 grams per kilogram for older adults—plus whole foods over smoothies or supplements to help preserve muscle and metabolic health.
Mediterranean, DASH and MIND diets were presented as practical templates, with experts saying consistency, regular movement, healthy weight and little-to-no alcohol matter alongside diet.
