Studios Architecture Paris and Selldorf Architects won the Louvre’s competition to design an expansion that includes a new dedicated Mona Lisa exhibition space.
The project adds a second public entrance to relieve chronic overcrowding and is designed to lift the museum’s annual capacity by 3 million visitors.
French culture minister Catherine Pégard said the winning proposal was “respectful and contemporary” and would better connect the city, the palace and the museum.
The choice came after months of delay and deliberation, with a 21-member international jury selecting the team from a shortlist of five contenders.
The overhaul would reshape one of the world’s biggest museums, though the plan has already drawn criticism over its cost.
