Prof Colin Duncan of the University of Edinburgh said prolonged, extreme daily sauna use can lower sperm production because testicles function better at cooler temperatures.
Most men still produce far more sperm than fertility requires, he said, so occasional sauna visits should make no difference and even reduced counts usually do not impair fertility.
Borderline low-count men are the main group likely to be affected, particularly those already being assessed for fertility problems.
Duncan pointed to Finland's heavy sauna use without an obvious infertility problem and said his key advice is to moderate anything done in excess.
