President Tamas Sulyok said Monday he will not resign by the end of May, rejecting new Prime Minister Peter Magyar’s demand and escalating a power clash at the top of Hungary’s state.
Index.hu carried Sulyok’s response, in which he said he intends to serve out his mandate under the existing constitutional framework.
The standoff now points to a legal battle in Budapest over whether Magyar can force out a president who says his term is protected by the constitution.
