Beijing saw Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin issue a joint statement calling an end to the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran a matter of “utmost urgency,” after Xi hosted Putin on Wednesday.
The two leaders said U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran violated international law, warned the conflict could spread across the Middle East, and pressed for a return to dialogue and negotiations.
Their statement also denounced what it called “treacherous” tactics — including using talks as cover for attacks, assassinating leaders, provoking regime change and kidnapping national leaders for trial.
Iran’s ties to both powers help explain the stance: China is estimated to buy up to 90% of Tehran’s crude exports, while Russia has deepened military links with Iran since invading Ukraine in 2022.
After the meeting, Moscow and Beijing also reaffirmed support for each other’s territorial integrity, with Russia backing the One China principle and China opposing outside interference in Russian affairs.
