One spectator removed from Aronimink’s 16th hole was the same fan who had been taunting Rory McIlroy for much of the round, according to Smylie Show producer Charlie Hulme.
A 'USA' shout appeared to trigger McIlroy’s reaction, but Hulme said the fan and a companion had already followed him, yelling insults such as 'You suck Rory' and 'Just go home.'
The incident came after McIlroy’s third shot on the par-5 16th found a bunker, effectively ending his chase of leader Aaron Rai and making the outburst look, at first glance, like frustration.
