Twenty-two minutes into Nantes' 0-0 Ligue 1 match with Toulouse, hooded supporters breached barriers, invaded the pitch and forced the game to be abandoned.
Dozens of fans, reportedly enraged by Nantes' poor season, overwhelmed stewards and hurled flares and other pyrotechnics onto the field, sending players from both teams running to the tunnel.
Riot police entered the pitch, used tear gas and pushed the invaders back into the stands, but officials and local authorities concluded player safety could no longer be guaranteed.
Sports Minister Marina Ferrari called the invasion "unacceptable," and Nantes now faces likely sanctions as French football again comes under pressure over hooliganism and stadium security.
