Ontario County, New York, reported a suspected hantavirus infection in a high school student, with local officials describing the illness as mild after weeks of fatigue, achiness and lethargy.
A sample has been sent to the CDC for confirmation, and the case appears tied to rodent exposure rather than person-to-person spread.
Kate Ott, the county's public health director, said the hantavirus seen in the U.S. is not transmitted between people and has no known link to the recent cruise-ship outbreak.
