Russian Forces Regroup for Summer Donbas Offensive as April Gains Halve From March

Ukrainian military officials say Russian forces are regrouping along the front for a possible summer offensive aimed at the Donbas, with Kostyantynivka emerging as a key hotspot on the edge of Russian advances.
April territorial gains in the Donbas fell to about half March's pace and one-sixth of December 2025's, Ukrainian monitoring site DeepState says, after Kyiv stepped up strikes on Russian logistics and supply routes.
11km on foot over two days was what one Ukrainian infantryman needed to leave his foxhole after 225 days, underscoring how drones now dominate the front and make troop rotations, resupply and movement perilous.
Drones deliver much of the food and ammunition to forward posts because supply routes are cut, yet they are often jammed or destroyed, leaving soldiers short of water and exposed to gas attacks, hypothermia and constant detection risks.
Kostyantynivka's defense matters because its fall could open Russian pressure on Kramatorsk and Sloviansk from multiple directions, even as both sides rely on drones but still need infantry to hold ground.
Russia's advance has slowed, but is this the calm before a summer offensive that will shatter Ukraine's defenses?

Ukraine Reverses Russian Gains: Stalled Offensive, Strategic Strikes, and Escalating Civilian Toll in the 2026 War
Overview
Between April and May 2026, Russia’s spring and summer offensive stalled as Ukraine achieved a series of strategic gains. Ukrainian forces continued to inflict heavy losses on Russian troops, especially in Donetsk Oblast, and actively worked to thwart Russia’s renewed offensive plans. This period marked Russia’s first net loss of controlled territory since 2024, with Russian forces losing 116 square kilometers. The Russian rate of advance has steadily declined since November 2025, largely due to effective Ukrainian ground counterattacks that disrupted Russian operations. These developments highlight a significant shift in the battlefield dynamics in Ukraine’s favor.
