Lula said a workable personal relationship with Donald Trump could help Brazil draw U.S. investment, avoid additional tariffs and sanctions, and secure respect for Brazil’s democratic institutions.
In a Washington Post interview, he said policy clashes would not block state-to-state ties, even as he opposes war with Iran, rejects U.S. intervention in Venezuela and condemns what he called genocide in Palestine.
The Brazilian leader said he wants Trump to treat Brazil with respect and recognize him as the country’s democratically elected president.
The comments extend Lula’s recent effort to build rapport with Trump after a White House visit this month, where he said making Trump laugh might help Brazil win more from the relationship.
