18-year-old Jakob Krise was arrested around 7 a.m. Saturday after police said he fled a crash that fatally struck SUNY Potsdam student Emily Mae Smith.
Smith, 20, was hit just after 3 a.m. on Pierrepont Avenue along the campus edge, taken to a hospital and later died of her injuries.
Police said Krise, of Brasher Falls, sped away after the collision and now faces multiple charges, including leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death and driving while intoxicated.
SUNY Potsdam identified Smith as a sophomore business major and women’s basketball player; the school held a moment of silence at graduation and is planning a special commemoration.
Krise is scheduled to appear in Potsdam Town Court at noon on Wednesday, May 20.
