Carlos Giménez said Cuba poses a direct U.S. national security threat after an Axios report said Havana had acquired more than 300 military drones since 2023.
Axios, citing classified intelligence, said Cuban officials discussed using the Russian- and Iranian-supplied drones against Guantánamo Bay, U.S. Navy vessels and possibly Key West, 90 miles from Havana.
The report also said Cuba sought additional drones and military equipment from Russia in the past month, though Reuters said it could not independently verify the claims.
The warning lands days after CIA Director John Ratcliffe visited Havana and after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told Congress Cuba threatens U.S. security; Cuban officials denied making any threats.
The dispute follows Trump’s Jan. 29 executive order declaring a national emergency over the Cuban threat and imposing new sanctions on the island.
